Top 5 Objectives
Students Back In School
I really want to see all students back in the classroom this Fall. As a Board member, I will make every effort to safely get all students back in the classroom where they belong. I believe the Board will need to be focused on the huge disparities that will exist from the learning that took place during the pandemic. There is a lot of catching up to do, while also challenging those who were fortunate enough to maintain grade standards. There are also some serious mental health issues that we may need to address due to the pandemic and returning to the classroom.
New Opportunities For All Students
Right now has the potential to be an amazing time for our school district. We have addressed the overcrowding in schools, updated old curriculum, added new technology, completed much needed building maintenance and installed / improved school security. This opens the door for us to add new programs at our high school, explore ways to challenge our brightest students and also lift up those who are struggling. I don't have all the answers, but I am looking to listen to the needs of all who are interested and find ways to make this incredible school district even stronger.
Board and District Communication
I believe it is time for a communications director in our district. Someone who can understand and communicate the direction of the Board while also coordinating all of the happenings within the district. This person can also get answers to the community when there are questions and be the "go to" when there is an emergency and information needs to be disseminated.
Listen and Lead
As a Board member, my principal role will be to listen and hear all sides of an issue. I will collect all necessary information and make a decision that I feel is best for our students. I am not interested in making a ton of changes or getting into the weeds with the daily decisions of our district. However, I do feel it is important for a Board to have short and long-term goals. The district has a strategic plan, but what are some goals for the next year? The pandemic has made it even more critical that our board has clear and well communicated objectives and shows the leadership necessary to get us through these challenging times.
Remove Politics and Social Agendas
I very strongly feel politics and social agendas have no place in our schools. We must create environments where every student has the ability to thrive and feel comfortable no matter their race, religion, political leanings or personal struggles. Teaching should address both sides of an issue and look to foster open discussion and healthy debate. Students should be able to learn from our past successes and failures both as a country and as a society. There is just far too much noise for our kids now. Let's find ways to set good examples for our kids, figure out how to work together and move forward with the objective to make the experience the best possible for our children.
